The joint decision by the five of us to form a full-time professional band playing a relatively arcane type of music was a bit like stepping off into the wilderness with a sketchy map. Luckily, we had three things going for us. First, the musicianship of the individual members made it seem worthwhile. Second, we had a fantastic and growing repertoire, thanks to the many who, more than a generation before us, had recorded such treasures, and thanks to the tape collection that someone had given to Mac that had most all the early recordings on it. And third, we had the help of many festival promoters, university folk clubs, coffeehouse owners, and folklorists, who found our performing style entertaining enough come to our aid.
