Lakewood, CA, fiddler Mel Durham passed away on March 5, at the age of 93. A member of the Wayne County (IL) Apple Knockers in the 1930s, Durham played old-time, country, bluegrass, rockabilly, and big band music, among other styles, in many bands and venues throughout his more than eighty years as a musician. He was a recipient of the California Traditional Music Society Award in 1996 and the Topanga Music Legend Award in 2003. For about 15 years, Durham was the president of the Southern California Old Time Fiddlers Association. He was also a Bronze Star and Purple Heart honoree, recognized for his service during World War II.
