On the first day of Spring, 2003, we laid Melvin
Wine to rest on a hill overlooking Salt Lick
Creek in Braxton County, West Virginia. The hillside
family plot is at the mouth of Stouts Run, the
hollow where he was born almost 94 years ago. He
lived a very full life, right to the end. The day
before being stricken with a massive stroke, he
was seen ambling up to the barn, on two canes,
checking on a young cow with calf. Later that day,
while his farmhand was doing evening chores, he
heard Melvin all alone in his house, playing his
fiddle.
