Final Notes, Wanona Rash Van Hoy

Wanona Rash Van Hoy, 82, passed away on March 4, following a brief illness. With her husband Harper, Wansie served as host of The Ole Time Fiddlers & Bluegrass Festival in Union Grove, North Carolina for over 35 years. The festival, known to many as “Fiddlers Grove,” traces its history in Union Grove to 1924 when Harper Van Hoy’s father, H. P. Van Hoy, founded the Old Time Fiddlers Convention as a school fundraiser. Though she was a teacher, an educational administrator, and choir director of the Union Grove Methodist Church, Wansie’s avocation was assisting her husband with the Fiddlers Grove festival every May. She was the one who confirmed reservations, organized volunteers, directed festival goers to workshops, walked lost toddlers back to the tent, and welcomed all with a smile. She will be sadly missed.
