The North Randolph Historical Society was the first North Carolina recipient of a roadside marker in the Legends & Lore program of the Pomeroy Foundation. Placed in downtown Randleman, North Carolina, the sign commemorates the story of Naomi (“Omie”) Wise, a young woman whose 1807 drowning in the nearby Deep River, by her lover Jonathan (“Jon”) Lewis, is the subject of the famous ballad tradition. Legends & Lore awards markers to communities across the country to recognize the importance of their folklife heritage.
